Why people buy jewellery on dhanteras?
People buy jewellery on dhanteras because :
- Most Hindu families prefer
purchasing gold during Diwali, purchasing gold and any jewellery during
Diwali is religiously significant as buying gold during Diwali and Dhanteras is considered auspicious.
The ritual of buying
gold or any jewellery during Diwali and Dhanteras is equivalent of inviting Lakshmi,
the goddess of wealth and prosperity at home. Apart from jewellery, the most
preferred item to purchase during
diwali are gold & silver coins.
Auspicious time to buy gold and jewellery :
- In
India, gold coins are specially molded for diwali with goddess Lakshmi
embossed on the front and her symbol shree embossed at the other side of
the coin.
In other coin, both goddess Lakshmi and Lord
ganesh and optionally goddess saraswati, are embossed on gold coins.
Like other important activities the Hindus
prefer to follow muhurta that is auspicious time to purchase gold during
diwali.
The Pushya Nakshatra day and dhanteras are the
two most auspicious days when most of the gold and jewellery purchasing occurs
during diwali Festivity.
Significance of buying gold or any jewellery
during dhanteras :
- The significance is that if you
buy something of gold or any silver jewellery or buy idols of Lord Ganesha
or Goddess Lakshmi, then there will be prosperity in the year ahead.
What is Dhanteras :
- According to the
Hindu calendar Dhanteras falls on the 13th day of Krishna Paksha or Dark fortnight = new moon and full moon and the month of Kartik That is why it is called Dhanteras.
On the day of dhanteras,
Hindus worship goddess Laxmi because Laxmi Ji is the goddess of wealth. Many
Hindus also worship Lord Kuber along with goddess Lakshmi because it is thought
that these will double the benefits of prayers.
Dhanteras also has great
significance along with Diwali. There are many mythological stories attached to
Diwali:
Story 1:- On the day
Dhan-Trayodasi goddess Lakshmi came out during the churning of the ocean therefore
Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped on the day of Trayodasi.
- It is believed that new
"dhan" (wealth) or some form of precious metal is a sign of good luck. In modern times, dhanteras have come to be known as the most auspicious occasion for buying gold, silver and other metals especially kitchenware..
Gold is one of the most loved precious metals in
India. The love for gold in India is evident as the country recently surpassed
China to be the largest importer of gold.
- The metal holds a great
sentimental value for the people in the country. An integral part of Indian
tradition, buying jewellery and gold is considered auspicious during
festivals such as Makar Sankranti, Gudi Padwa, Navratri, Dussehra,, Akshaya
Tritiya, Dhanteras or Diwali etc.
